In the face of growing inequality, environmental degradation, and social unrest, a new movement is emerging that is challenging the dominant neoliberal economic model. This movement is based on the idea that cooperatives—businesses that are owned and democratically controlled by their workers and members—can provide a more just and sustainable alternative to capitalism.
In their groundbreaking book, Cooperatives Confront Capitalism: Challenging the Neoliberal Economy, authors Jessica Gordon Nembhard and Andrew C. Johnson argue that cooperatives are not just a niche economic form, but a powerful force for social and economic transformation. They provide a comprehensive overview of the cooperative movement, from its history and principles to its potential for transforming the economy and society.
Nembhard and Johnson show how cooperatives can create new jobs, reduce poverty, and promote social inclusion. They also discuss the challenges that cooperatives face, such as the need for capital and the difficulty of competing with large corporations. However, they argue that the benefits of cooperatives far outweigh the challenges, and that they offer a real alternative to the neoliberal economic model.
Cooperatives Confront Capitalism is a must-read for anyone who is interested in social and economic justice and who is looking for ways to challenge the neoliberal economic model. It is a powerful and inspiring book that offers a vision of a more just and sustainable future.
