Donna Douglas was a young nurse when she arrived in Vietnam in 1966. She had never been to a war zone before, and she was not prepared for the horrors she would witness. But Douglas and the other nurses who served in Vietnam played a vital role in the war effort, providing medical care to wounded soldiers and civilians alike.
In Nightingales At War, Douglas tells the extraordinary story of these women. She describes the challenges they faced, the sacrifices they made, and the courage and compassion they displayed in the face of unimaginable hardship.
Douglas's book is a tribute to the nurses who served in Vietnam. It is a reminder of the sacrifices they made to serve their country, and a testament to their courage and compassion.
In her book, Douglas tells the stories of some of the nurses she served with, including:
- Captain Mary Lou McLaughlin, who was awarded the Bronze Star for her bravery in rescuing wounded soldiers under fire.
- Lieutenant Colonel Genevieve "Gene" Lentini, who was the first woman to command a medical unit in a combat zone.
- Major Margaret DeWitt, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for her work in developing a new method of treating burn victims.
