A Journalist's Immersive Journey into the Lives of Essential Workers

In a yearlong experiment, journalist A.J. Baime immersed himself in the lives of people who do the jobs that most Americans won't do. He worked alongside slaughterhouse workers, sewage treatment plant operators, garbage collectors, nurses, home healthcare workers, and construction laborers. He learned the challenges and rewards of these essential jobs, and he came away with a new understanding of the dignity of work.

"Garbage collectors are the unsung heroes of our cities," Baime said. "They do a job that most people take for granted, but it is essential to our health and well-being." alt="">
