Excerpt from "The Stranded Rider" by Tony Fitzpatrick

“I’ve never seen Chicago like this before,” he said, as we passed a building with boarded-up windows and a “For Rent” sign that looked like it had been there a long time. “It’s like a ghost town.”

“It is a ghost town,” I said. “At least, parts of it are. The Loop is pretty much empty. The Magnificent Mile too. All the tourists are gone.”

“I know,” he said. “I’ve been watching the news. It’s crazy. I never thought I’d see anything like this in my lifetime.”

We drove in silence for a while. The city passed by in a blur of empty streets and closed stores.

“I wonder what’s going to happen,” he said finally.

“I don’t know,” I said. “I just hope it doesn’t get any worse.”
